“Controlling HYPEREXTENSION: Knees & Elbows" • For Serious Students & Teachers 3-Class Workshop
Are your knees and elbows supporting your practice — or quietly undermining it? Alignment is one of the hallmarks of BKS Iyengar's teaching — and when hyperextension is present in the joints, the pose suffers. Hyperextension is a collapse into the joint rather than an active engagement of it — and its effects extend far beyond the knee or elbow itself.
In yoga philosophy, the karmendriyas — the organs of action — such as the arms and legs, are the limbs through which we engage with the world. When the knees and elbows are hyperextended and their actions are lacking, the shoulders, hips, and spine are left without the support they need. At best, this creates dullness and missed potential. Left unaddressed, it contributes to pain and the risk of injury.
This three-class workshop is designed for serious students and teachers who want to fine-tune the actions needed to control hyperextension in the knees and elbows — building awareness, developing the right actions, and experiencing how better alignment in these two joints makes the whole body feel stronger, lighter, and more integrated.
